VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy), the new telescope at ESO's 4.1 operating under the dark skies of Cile, ci mostra M42, la famosissima nebulosa di Orine, con un dettaglio mai visto in una serie di straordinarie immagini ottenute nell'infrarosso. VISTA è un telescopio progettato per mappare il cielo nella regione infrarossa dello spettro elettromagnetico. Pur essendo uno degli oggetti astronomici più conosciuti, fotografati e studiati del cielo, M42 si presenta nelle immagini ottenute da VISTA nella sua straordinaria bellezza mostrandoci altresì dettagli mai rilevati in precedenza. Situata nella costellazione di Orione a disegnarne parte della spada, M42 è una regione di formazione stallare la cui distanza è stimata in 1350 anni luce. Visibile anche a

These jets excite the surrounding gas causing the emission of radiation also detected in images of VISTA.
